Dumbleton Hall - The Story of a Victorian Country House
Written by John Richard Hodges
The history of Dumbleton Hall is a fascinating cameo of English history. The first Hall, owned by the Cocks family was demolished c1780.
In 1830 the agriculturist Edward Holland employed G. S. Repton to build the present Hall. Edward’s cousin was the novelist Elizabeth Gaskell, and he knew Charles Darwin, Charles Dickens and the Wedgwood family.
Edward’s 14 children played in the grounds here. The Eyres-Monsell era began in 1881 and amongst others the Mitfords, John Betjeman and the German Ambassador Ribbentrop were invited to stay at Dumbleton.
From 1996, Dumbleton Hall, has been owned by the Post Office Fellowship of Remembrance and is presently run by the Classic Hotel Chain. It is a wonderful venue for weddings and is perfect for enjoying the beautiful Cotswolds countryside which surrounds it.
