The Day Thou Gavest - 'John Cunningham' by John Richard Hodges
Written by John Richard Hodges
‘The Day Thou Gavest’ is a story of life in an English boarding school in the nineteen sixties.
It gives a poignant and nostalgic view of what life was like in a private boarding school in England during one of the most fascinanting decades of the Twentieth Century.
The school was established around a magnificent Victorian ‘Calendar House’ where it is said there are 12 chimneys for the months, 365 windows for the days, 52 rooms for the weeks and 7 entrances. The centrepiece of the mansion was a fine ‘Calendar’ window showing the seasons. The mansion is set in the South Shropshire countryside, one of the most beautiful and often little visited parts of the United Kingdom.
The story is seen through the eyes of one of the senior boys Richard Eastcliffe who is in his final year in the Sixth form, he tells the story of his time at the school through various chapters which span his years as a pupil here.
